Letter from Ryan

Dear Parents and Players,

I’m extremely excited to start working with NORCO volleyball. I’ve always admired the club, the great athletes, and the parent support. Here are the areas that we will be focusing on during the 2010-2011 club season.

Injury prevention – The two main areas we will focus most on are the knees and shoulders. The knees are an area of great concern for female athletes; girls are up to 8 times more likely than boys to tear their ACL. We can help prevent injuries be teaching the girls proper landing technique as well as strengthening the muscles around the knees, especially the hamstrings. We will be strengthening the shoulders using a variety of exercises with exercise bands and free weights.

Plyometrics – We will be doing a lot of plyometrics throughout the club season. We will incorporate jump boxes, the Vertimax jump trainer, and various other plyometric exercises during the season. Plyometrics are a great way for our athletes to increase their explosiveness and vertical while helping to prevent ACL injuries (numerous medical journals).

Strength training – The players will be doing both free weight and machine exercises to build strength and endurance in their muscles. We will start the season spending a lot of time learning proper technique and form. Weight training is a great way for the athletes to get stronger and also prepare them for their collegiate experience.

Speed, Agility, Quickness – We’ll be using includes ladders, cones, and hurdles in their SAQ training. We want the athletes to focus first on footwork and form then slowly increase speed making sure their technique is correct. This will help in foot speed and getting to the ball quicker.

Core – When most people think of core they only think of the abdominal muscles. I view core as their abdominal group (upper, lower, and obliques), lower back, and hips. These three areas are crucial in order to become better volleyball players because almost all movements activate these muscles. We will also be working on balance and body control particularly with the younger athletes using wobble boards and balance discs.

I have high expectations of the athletes and they should as well. The more they put into their workouts the more they’ll get out of them.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me at the number below or email me at ryan.tanaka@comcast.net.

Kind regards,

Ryan Tanaka
